Michael Gorriz, group chief information officer of Standard Chartered, said the success of the first CIIE laid a solid foundation for the second this year and the bank will use the CIIE to connect more with clients as well as demonstrate their long-term commitment to China.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- As innovative products and creative ideas are the hallmark of the second China International Import Expo (CIIE), Standard Chartered will focus on technology and innovation in its showcase, Michael Gorriz, group chief information officer of the bank told Xinhua in an interview.

The second CIIE, which will be held in Shanghai from Nov. 5 to 10, will be bigger than before, with the exhibition area expanded to 330,000 square meters, showcasing more new products and technologies.

As a London-headquartered financial services firm, Standard Chartered was one of the first batch of companies that committed to attending the first CIIE last year, and it has confirmed its participation in the second CIIE.

Gorriz said the success of the first CIIE laid a solid foundation for the second this year and the bank will use the CIIE to connect more with clients as well as demonstrate their long-term commitment to China.

Explaining further the bank's plan for this year's CIIE, he said the theme will be "to innovate and deliver financial services to connect international businesses to global markets."

Standard Chartered is looking forward to linking up with companies like corporate trading platforms during the coming CIIE to do more in trade financing and international commerce, he said.

Apart from international trade, technology and innovation are also key themes. During the second CIIE, Standard Chartered plans to showcase its eXellerator innovation lab, which has been designed to drive innovation, invest in promising fintechs and implement new business models to rewire the DNA of the banking sector.

In August this year, Standard Chartered announced it would set up a new eXellerator innovation lab in Shanghai. Amazed by China's leading position in new areas such as face recognition, machine learning and big data, Gorriz said the eXellerator innovation lab will be a strong technology arm of the bank that helps to develop ideas into technical and feasible solutions.
