ISTANBUL, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police on Friday detained six foreign nationals in Istanbul over their suspected links to the Islamic State (IS) militant group, local media reported.

Police launched operations simultaneously in nine locations across the city to capture the suspects, the state-run Anadolu Agency said, without identifying their nationalities.

The detainees were reportedly preparing to go to conflict zones in Syria in the upcoming days, Anadolu noted.

Meanwhile, the private Sabah daily put the number of detainees at 39, including three women, who were caught in operations conducted since the previous night.

The IS was blamed for a spate of deadly attacks over the years in Turkey, in which more than 300 people were killed.
