LAGOS, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's Lagos state government on Saturday said an unconfirmed number of deaths was recorded after a structure collapsed on another building in Magodo area of the state.

In a brief statement available to Xinhua, a monitoring team from the Lagos state government confirmed that the building collapsed during a heavy downpour.

"Unconfirmed number of deaths recorded. Emergency responders already at the scene," the statement said.

An eye witness had earlier told Xinhua that the building collapsed and fell on another house, crushing a woman and her three children who were sleeping.

Building collapses often occur in Nigeria as some property owners and developers do not adhere strictly to planning and building laws and regulations, according to local experts.

In most cases, heavy loads are placed on the building and substandard materials are often used in the construction work.

In March, at least 12 pupils of a primary school were confirmed dead following the collapse of a building which housed their school in Nigeria's commercial hub, Lagos.
