ISLAMABAD, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake rocked several cities in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and northern areas on Monday morning, the country's National Seismic Monitoring Center (NSMC) said.

According to the center, the epicenter of the quake was located in the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan with a depth of 157 km.

A local official told media that the earthquake was felt in parts of KP including Peshawar, Malakand, Mardan, Charsadda, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Torghar, Swat and other northern areas of the country.

No loss of life or property has been immediately reported, but the quake created panic among the people who scrambled out of buildings and compounds.

Monday's earthquake is the second quake above 5.0 magnitude hitting Pakistan within a week. Earlier on Wednesday, a 5.2-magnitude quake hit parts of the country.
