RIGA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The left-wing coalition currently ruling the Latvian capital Riga appears to be disintegrating as one of its partners, Harmony party, considers ending its partnership with Honor to Serve Riga (GKR), local media informed Monday.

Janis Urbanovics, leader of the Harmony faction in the Latvian parliament, told the media that the Harmony board met last weekend as the party is preparing for an upcoming congress. The party's next leadership, which will be elected at the congress, will be given the task to reconsider the usefulness of city council's current coalition.

Urbanovics admitted that Harmony is not satisfied with the most recent policies of GKR member Olegs Burovs who became Riga mayor two months ago.

Under Burovs' leadership, the city council has started going back on the promises Harmony and GKR gave to their electorate, Urbanovics said.

The current ruling coalition has 35 of the 60 seats on Riga city council, 17 of which are held by Harmony. If Harmony decides to quit, the coalition will break up and Burovs will lose the mayor's office.

Forming a new coalition would be extremely difficult, as the center-right opposition has vowed to never join a coalition with Harmony or GKR, which might mean a snap election in Riga.
