KIEV, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited military positions in eastern Ukraine on the Defender's Day of Ukraine, the president's official website reported on Monday.

"The Constitution of Ukraine says that Ukraine is an independent, sovereign, unitary and democratic state, and if someone does not agree with these words and wants to object, he will have to deal with you, our defenders," Zelensky said during a meeting with the Joint Forces Operation personnel in Donetsk.

Earlier in the day, Zelensky and his wife laid flowers at the memorial of soldiers killed at the front line at the memorial wall in Kiev.

The Defender's Day of Ukraine is a state holiday celebrated annually on Oct. 14, starting from 2015. It was established on Oct. 14, 2014, by a decree of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine started in April 2014.
