ANKARA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were killed and at least 12 others wounded on Tuesday after the rocket launchers and mortar shells fired from northern Syria by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) fell in Turkey's southern province of Mardin, a provincal statement said.

The mortar shells were reportedly fired from Derbesiye district of Haseke town in northern Syria, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, one soldier was killed and eight others injured in Syria after artillery fire from the Manbij region on Tuesday, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.

On Oct. 9, Turkey started military incursion into Syrian border towns of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn in order to "create a safe zone that would push the Kurdish militia away from its border and eventually allow the repatriation of up to 2 million Syrian refugees."

Ankara considers the YPG as the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
