SANTIAGO, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Fighting crime in today's interconnected world requires the cooperation of the international community, Chile's President Sebastian Pinera said on Tuesday.

"In a globalized world, effectively fighting crime is no longer the sole responsibility of states, countries, governments or societies, it is also the responsibility of the whole international community," Pinera said during the opening of the 88th General Assembly of Interpol in Santiago.

"Organized crime, terrorism and drug trafficking know no borders and operate in every country in the world," he said, adding "that is why cooperation is fundamental."

Only by joining forces "are we going to be able to push back against" these types of multinational criminal groups, he said.

Interpol is holding its general assembly which ends on Friday in Chile for the first time.
