TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council said on Wednesday that Iran will give a harsh response to those behind a recent attack on an Iranian tanker in the Red Sea, state TV reported.

The elements behind the attack on Iran's SABITI oil tanker were seeking to create tensions in the region, Ali Shamkhani said during his meeting with Alexander Lavrentiev, Russian president's special envoy to Syria.

"Iran's response would make them regret their action," Shamkhani added.

On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said "one or more governments" were involved in the recent attack on the SABITI.

On Oct. 11, two separate explosions, possibly caused by the missile strikes, hit the SABITI in the Red Sea some 60 miles (96.6 km) off Saudi Arabia's Jeddah port city.

The explosions hit the vessel's hull, causing damage to the ship's two main tanks.
