RABAT, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan police seized on Thursday 1.65 tons of cannabis in the central town of Chichaoua.

These drugs were seized at the entrance to Chichaoua on board a truck registered in Morocco, according to a statement of the Moroccan Police.

The banned substance is suspected of being linked to international drug trafficking networks, the statement said, adding the 36-year-old driver of the truck was arrested.

A pneumatic boat that would be used in maritime traffic was also seized during this operation, it said.

On Wednesday, Moroccan customs office said it had aborted three smuggling operations since Oct. 1, seizing a total of 8.342 tons of cannabis heading to Europe.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis farming in the last decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the cannabis resin, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Enditem
