KABUL, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 32 worshippers were killed and over 60 wounded after a mortar shelling attack hit a mosque in Haska Mina district of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province on Friday, a provincial source said.

"The incident occurred in Jodari at midday when two mortar shells fired by militants struck a mosque during Friday prayers and the roof of the muddy building collapsed by the force of the explosions," the source told Xinhua anonymously.

The wounded were shifted to a district hospital and some seriously injured civilians were transported to a regional hospital in provincial capital of Jalalabad, the source added.

The death toll was likely to rise, he said. According to earlier reports 18 people were killed in the attack.

No group has claimed the incident so far, but Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants controls parts of the province, 120 km east of the capital Kabul.

Over the past months, Afghanistan has witnessed waves of terror attacks. Two security force members and a civilian were killed and 43 people were injured on Wednesday in a Taliban truck bombing in neighboring Laghman province.

In a separate attack, six civilians were killed and five others wounded after a vehicle hit a Taliban-planted landmine in Zawel district of western Herat province earlier on Friday, local media reported.
