ABUJA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Four people were burned to death when two buses moving in opposite directions had a head-on collision in Nigeria's southern state of Ondo, the local road safety police confirmed on Friday.
The two buses involved in the accident on Thursday immediately caught fire, said Olusegun Ogungbemide, head of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ondo.
The dead victims burned beyond recognition, Ogungbemide said. Fourteen other people sustained varying degrees of injuries following the incident on the Owo-Benin expressway of the state.
He said injured victims were rushed to a government hospital in the area.
Preliminary investigation has proved that the cause of the accident was the violation of the speed limit by the drivers of both vehicles, he added.
On June 8, at least 18 people were burned to death in a similar accident in Ondo.
Deadly road accidents are common in Nigeria often due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
