NANJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Yangzhong, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province, is pioneering the application of renewable energy, with continuing efforts to boost the integration of industrial development and urban construction, according to a recent conference.

Striving to grow its green gross domestic product (GDP), the city has launched measures to adjust its industrial energy consumption structure and tackle environmental issues to spur the transition from old to new economic engines and transform ecological advantages into development advantages, said Zhang Dejun, mayor of Yangzhong, at the press conference for the Second International Green Energy Development Conference (IGEDC) hosted in the city.

The city has seen various new energy applications, such as the widely used PV roof modules, green public transport and new energy charging piles.

Meanwhile, a grid-side energy storage power station has been put into operation in Yangzhong, making clean energy consumption significantly more convenient than in the past.

With such efforts, Yangzhong saw its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (about 1,414 U.S. dollars) of regional GDP hit 0.1616 tonnes of standard coal equivalent by the end of last year, down from 0.2094 tonnes in 2016.

Renewable energy has become a significant component of the global energy structure, with the electricity output from renewable energy accounting for one-third of total power installed capacity worldwide in 2018, according to the Annual Development Report of Global Green Energy Applications released by the China Economic Information Service at the IGEDC.
