MADRID, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona replaced Real Madrid as leaders of Spain's La Liga after the ninth round of games this weekend.

Barca produced their best away performance of the season to win 3-0 in Eibar's Ipurua Stadium, while Real Madrid suffered a surprise defeat in Mallorca.

Samuel Umtiti was a surprise starter for Barca after injury, while Antoine Griezmann, Leo Messi and Luis Suarez combined more effectively in attack that they had so far this season.

Griezmann put Barca ahead after being put clean through on goal in the 13th minute, Messi doubled their lead after a move involving Griezmann and Suarez in the 57th minute and then teed up Suarez to seal the win shortly afterwards.

Real Madrid were expected to move back to the top after their visit to recently promoted Mallorca, but Zinedine Zidane's men crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat in the Son Moix Stadium in Saturday's last game.

Real Madrid were without the injured Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Tony Kroos, while Rafael Varane and Eden Hazard was rested ahead of next week's vital Champions League game away to Galatasaray, but Zidane still fielded a strong side including Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo, with Thibaut Courtois returning in goal.

Mallorca won thanks to Lago Junior's seventh minute strike and a disjointed Real Madrid struggled to respond as Luka Jovic, Isco and James Rodriguez again disappointed and Alvaro Odriozola was sent off in the second half for two yellow cards.

Atletico Madrid made it three consecutive home games without a win as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Valencia.

Diego Simeone's men had only scored twice in their last four matches and Saturday's goal was from the penalty spot as Diego Costa scored after the VAR confirmed that Denis Cheryshev had committed a handball.

Atletico looked short of confidence in attack and Valencia's Dani Parejo assured a share of the points with an 82nd minute free kick, although Valencia ended up with 10 men after Lee Kang was sent off in the 91st minute.

Atletico had more bad news as youngster Joao Felix was carried off with an ankle injury and he will be sidelined for at least a month as they slipped out of the top-four.

Second half substitute Angel Rodriguez scored both goals as Getafe beat Leganes 2-0 in the south Madrid derby to leave their rivals bottom of the table and without a win all season.

Sunday saw Alaves take a step towards safety with a 2-0 win at home to fellow strugglers, Celta Vigo thanks to second half goals from Lisandro Magallan and Lucas Perez.

Real Sociedad fell behind to Loren Moron's seventh goal of the season for Betis, but fought back well to claim an impressive 3-1 win in front of their fans.

Javi Garcia's own goal levelled the score, before Willian Jose put Real ahead with a crisp finish before the break and Portu assured the points with just over half an hour left to play.

Karl Toko Ekambi scored a first half goal to give Villarreal a 1-0 win away to Espanyol and condemn Pablo Machin to defeat in his first game since replacing David Gallego as Espanyol coach.

A bad error from Athletic Club Bilbao keeper Unai Simon allowed Valladolid to sneak a 1-1 draw in San Mames. The home keeper punched a cross onto defender Inigo Martinez and into his own net to cancel out Inaki Williams' first half opener for Athletic.

Luuk de Jong has had to wait a long time for his first goal for Sevilla, but the Dutch striker netted his first goal for the club in the 85th minute of their game at home to Levante to give Julen Lopetegui's side three points that lift them to sixth in the table.

The round of matches kicked off on Friday as Granada continued their excellent start to the season with a 1-0 win at home to Osasuna.
