China's Macao, South Korea sign agreements on surrender of fugitive offenders, criminal judicial assistance

MACAO, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and South Korea have signed the Agreement on Surrender of Fugitive Offenders and the Agreement on Criminal Judicial Assistance, the Macao SAR government said here on Wednesday in a press release.

The agreements were signed in the Macao SAR government headquarters by Macao SAR's Secretary for Administration and Justice Chan Hoi Fan and the Consul General of South Korea in Hong Kong SAR Kim Weon-Jin, according to the press release.

After the signing ceremony, Chan said the agreements were reached after several years of negotiations in the context of the continuous development of relations between China and South Korea.

Those agreements were prepared in accordance with the draft authorized by China's central government, the specific cases and requests from South Korea and Macao's legal framework, and were proceeded with appropriate negotiations and adjustments, Chan added.

The Agreement on Surrender of Fugitive Offenders aims to reinforce mutual cooperation of Macao and South Korea in the delivery of fugitive offenders to ensure the criminal accountability of the offenders and the enforcement of the sentence.

The Agreement on Criminal Judicial Assistance aims to promote reciprocal legal assistance in criminal matters between Macao and South Korea, including the notification of judicial acts, the taking of evidence, the search and seizure, the recovery of instruments and proceeds of crime.

The agreements shall enter into force on the 30th day following the date when the signing parties notify the completion of their respective internal procedures for their entry into force.
