SARAJEVO, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Citizens' deposits in commercial banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in the first nine months of this year amount to record 12.89 billion Bosnian KM (7.3 billion U.S. dollars), the Central Bank of BiH (CBBH) said in a report on Wednesday.

In the January-September period, citizens of BiH saved 1.06 billion KM, or 8.9 percent more deposits year-on-year, the report said, on the occasion of World Saving Day on Oct. 31.

"In terms of the currency structure, deposits in the local currency amount to 5.52 billion KM, which is 42.8 percent of the share," the report said.

Deposits in euro amounted to 6.74 billion KM, or 52.2 percent, while deposits in other foreign currencies amounted to 638 million KM, or 5.0 percent.

The CBBH report explains that a stable domestic banking sector, with a reliable deposit insurance system, provides a guarantee to the citizens for their future.

BiH's citizens mainly decide to save money for extraordinary circumstances and emergencies, for worrying about a possible decline in purchasing power in the future, for larger purchases and for old age to supplement a pension or health insurance. (1 U.S. dollar =1.76 KM) Enditem
