LA PLATA, Argentina, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Diego Maradona's Gimnasia suffered their ninth defeat in 12 Superliga Argentina matches on Saturday, falling 1-0 at home to local rivals Estudiantes.
Boca Juniors loanee Mateo Retegui broke the deadlock in the 57th minute with a superb 25-yard strike after clever work from Gaston Fernandez.
The result left Gimnasia 23rd in the 24-team standings as they fight to remain in Argentina's top division.
Estudiantes, who haven't lost to their La Plata foes Gimnasia in more than nine years, rose to seventh, five points behind leaders Argentinos Juniors.
Since 1986 World Cup winner Maradona replaced Dario Ortiz as head coach on September 5, Gimnasia and have won two and lost five of their seven Superliga matches.
In other fixtures on Saturday, Rosario Central beat Godoy Cruz 5-1 and Atletico Tucuman overcame Colon 2-0.
