KAMPALA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Over 360 personnel from the six East African Community (EAC) member countries on Monday began a two-week joint military training exercise in the eastern Ugandan district of Jinja.

Deo Akiiki, Uganda's deputy military spokesperson, told Xinhua that the EAC joint Command Post Exercise (CPX) aims to promote the regional integration agenda, interoperability of the region's armed forces and to improve their readiness in responding to complex security challenges in the region.

"This is a rotational military exercise. It's intended to promote interoperability among EAC defense forces and civilian components," said Akiiki.

The 12th edition of CPX, dubbed Ushirikiano Imara 2019 has attracted military, police, prisons, immigration personnel and key civilian stakeholders from Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Kenya and South Sudan.

The CPX is conducted under the framework of the EAC protocol on cooperation in defense affairs, one of the interventions aimed at promoting the regional integration agenda.

Under the protocol, the partner states agreed to cooperate in all defense affairs and collaborate with international and regional organizations to promote peace, security and stability in the community.
