MADRID, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Celta Vigo on Monday confirmed 46-year-old Oscar Garcia as their first team coach until the end of the current season.

Oscar replaces Fran Escriba, who was sacked by the club on Sunday night after a fourth consecutive defeat left them third from bottom of Spain's Liga Santander with just nine points from 12 games.

A product of the FC Barcelona youth system Oscar played for Barca, as well as Valencia and Espanyol, before ending his playing career with Lleida.

After hanging up his boots he has had a varied coaching career which has seen him work with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Red Bull Salzburg, where he won league titles in Israel and Austria, but with less success at Brighton, Olympiakos and St Etienne and Watford (although he had to leave Watford due to health issues).

Oscar becomes the latest in a line of coaches with Barcelona connections to coach Celta, following in the footsteps of Juan Carlos Unzue, Luis Enrique, Eusebio Sacristan and Hristo Stoichkov and ironically his first game in charge of his new club will be away to FC Barcelona in the Camp Nou Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Celta are the second Liga Santander club to name a new coach on Monday after bottom of the table Leganes named former Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Mexico and Japan coach, Javier Aguirre as the replacement for Mauricio Pellegrino with a contract until the end of the campaign.
