The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 11.84 points, or 0.05 percent, from Tuesday to 23,263.83.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 4.18 points, or 0.25 percent, at 1,689.98.
