BANGKOK, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Tuesday said most of the collected floats after the festival night are made of biodegradable material.

Out of the 500,000 floats they have collected after Loy Krathong Festival on Monday night, over 96.3 percent are of biodegradable material, according to the BMA.

Loy Krathong celebrants in Bangkok have heeded calls for environment conservation by turning to disposable floats instead of styrofoam this year, said the BMA on Tuesday.

"City workers have collected a total of 502,024 of the traditional floats from Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, canals, lakes and parks throughout Bangkok," said Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang, noting that only 18,760 were made of styrofoam.

The governor said they were very happy that Thais know degradable materials can be turned into organic fertilizers.

Major shopping malls across Thailand will cease handing out single-use plastic bags from January 2020.
