Police say the 57-year-old Hong Kong male resident who was set on fire by rioter is suffering from second-degree burns on 40 percent of body.

HONG KONG, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The man who was set on fire by a rioter in Hong Kong is suffering from second-degree burns on 40 percent of his body, the Hong Kong police said Wednesday.

The 57-year-old man got into a dispute with rioters over political views on a footbridge in the Ma On Shan area on Monday. He was beaten up brutally, and was poured with suspected flammable liquid and set on fire by a rioter.

The man was still in critical condition at hospital, and the police could not take his statement, Li Kwai-wah, senior superintendent of Organized Crime and Triad Bureau of the Hong Kong police, said at a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon.

The case has been classified as an attempted murder by the police.

The Chinese central government on Tuesday strongly condemned the rioters' criminal deed of setting a civilian on fire, and called for prompt actions to arrest the rioters and punish them in accordance with the law.
