ABUJA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- At least 100,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno have been trapped following a flood disaster at a Nigeria-Cameroon border town, a local official said on Wednesday.

More than 4,000 hectares of farmland were also destroyed by the recent flood in Rann, a town in Kalabalge local government area of Borno, said Zainab Gimba, a lawmaker representing the state at the national parliament.

Gimba said an overflow of River Kaalia in Cameroon wreaked the havoc.

According to Gimba, among the victims are thousands of women and children who were trapped without food, shelter and basic amenities.

The victims are now faced with relocation challenges, as other IDP camps nearby were either overpopulated or suffering from flooding issues as well, Gimba told Xinhua on telephone.

"I am further worried that the people of Kalabalge are unable to get adequate help as the road linking it with other parts the state has been destroyed by the floods, making Rann town inaccessible by road," she said.

The situation had become even more worrisome as the deplorable state of the link road had been effectively cut off, thus frustrating humanitarian operations as trucks conveying relief materials are left stranded in remote towns along the way, the lawmaker said.

She called for urgent actions to tackle the flooding and provide succor to the victims, as failure to do so might lead to massive loss of lives.
