TRIPOLI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- The forces of Libya's UN-backed government on Thursday said they captured 3 soldiers of the rival eastern-based army in south of the capital Tripoli, which is witnessing armed conflict between the two parties.

"Our forces in Wadi Al-Rabee axis (southern Tripoli) captured 3 members of Haftar's army and seized their vehicles," Spokesman of the UN-backed government forces Mohamed Gonono said in a statement.

The statement also accused the eastern-based army of indiscriminately shelling a residential neighborhood in southern Tripoli, killing a civilian and injuring another.

Besides, it accused the eastern-based army of killing 3 civilians earlier on Thursday in Garrabulli town, some 50 km east of Tripoli.

The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli and topple the UN-backed government.

The fighting killed and injured thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians away from their homes.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability following the 2011 uprising that toppled the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime.
