32 terrorists killed in fierce fights in northern Burkina Faso

OUAGADOUGOU, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Burkina Faso army on Sunday said that 32 terrorists have been killed in fierce fights on Friday in the central-north and northern regions of the country.

The army in a release said 24 terrorists lost their lives in an ambush on army patrol on Friday in the vicinity of Yorsala, Titao department in northern Loroum province, while 8 others were killed in Bourzanga department in the central-north Bam province.

"Forceful response on Friday followed by a large dragging in Yorsala forest caused many hours of intensive fights. Twenty-four terrorists lost their lives during the confrontations and many materials were seized", the army communication directorate said.

Based on accurate information on Saturday, northern safeguarding forces also waged an offensive action in the vicinity of Bourzanga in central-north of the country, the release said.

"The operation enabled the killing of eight terrorists and the seizure of important package of arsenal, ammunition and other materials," the release said, adding one Burkina Faso soldier was killed during the operation.

"The operation also enabled the release of several women that were kept as sexual slaves by the terrorists", it said.

Burkina Faso is faced with a worsening security situation in the northern regions which suffer from frequent terrorist attacks.

Since 2015, terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of over 500 people including 200 of the armed forces and displaced thousands of others in the west African country.
