MADRID, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Tuesday that Luis Enrique returns as the coach of the Spanish national team, while his former assistant Robert Moreno, who had replaced him as coach has left the job.
Moreno replaced Luis Enrique on a temporary basis in March when the coach's daughter was diagnosed with cancer and his position was made temporary in June when Luis Enrique renounced his positon to help care for his daughter, who sadly passed away during the summer.
At the time Moreno said that he would gladly step aside if Enrique wanted to return in the future, but he went on to coach Spain in nine games, achieving seven wins and two draws and qualifying the Spanish side among the top seeds for next summer's European Championship finals.
Speaking to the press, the RFEF President Luis Rubiales explained that "we made it clear to Robert Moreno that when Luis Enrique wanted to return he would leave the post and he promised that Luis Enrique would always have the door open ... think it is clear," he added.
Rubiales said he had spoken to Enrique at the end of October when he "told me his intention to get back into coaching," and that Moreno had told him "he wanted to pact his departure to not be an impediment to Luis Enrique" returning.
"Luis Enrique had to leave his position as coach for a situation that no father would ever want to live through. He is the leader of this project and he will continue until the World Cup in Qatar (2022) ... We want to wish Luis Enrique the best for his return," concluded Rubiales.
