RIGA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Opposition members of Riga City Council on Thursday gathered the necessary number of signatures to table a no-confidence motion in the Latvian capital city's mayor Olegs Burovs, local media reported.

"We see that Burovs is not coping with the task of running the city council, so it has been decided to demand his resignation," Ieva Graudina-Sutko, a representative of the opposition For Development of Latvia party, told reporters.

In accordance with the law on local authorities, Riga City Council has to vote on the no-confidence motion within two weeks.

Dainis Locis, a member of the city council of the opposition right-wing National Alliance, said that with this vote, the opposition wants to test mayor Burovs' ability to secure a majority of votes and avoid being sacked.

The Latvian capital city's ruling coalition already lost its formal majority on the city council this week after the left-wing Harmony and its long-time partner Honor to Serve Riga (GKR) severed ties with the faction of independent councilmen.

If Burovs is deposed in the no-confidence vote, a snap municipal election is likely to follow in Riga.
