BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan on Friday met with a delegation of Syria's Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, led by Helal Helal, deputy general secretary of the ruling party.

China and Syria are both countries with a long history and splendid civilization, Wang said, noting bilateral relations have maintained sound and stable development since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

"China firmly supports Syria in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, supporting the Syrian people to decide the country's future on their own, as well as supporting a political solution to the Syrian issue," said the vice president.

He noted that the friendship between the Chinese and Syrian people has stood the test of time, and "China is willing to play a positive role in Syria's economic and social reconstruction by jointly advancing the Belt and Road Initiative."

Wang also expressed the hope that the ruling parties of the two countries strengthen communication and cooperation to promote greater development of China-Syria relations in the new era.

Helal said Syria treasures the friendship with and support from China over the years and hopes China will fully participate in Syria's post-war reconstruction.

"The Syrian Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party is willing to strengthen mutual learning with the Communist Party of China, to promote the constant development and progress of relations between the two parties and the two countries," he said.
