BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Xu Qiliang, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, met with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Beijing Friday.

Acknowledging Kissinger's important role in pushing forward China-U.S. relations, Xu said the essence and prospect of the bilateral ties should feature mutual respect, setting aside differences while seeking common ground, and pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation.

The military ties between China and the United States should be a stabilizer for bilateral relations, and the two sides should strengthen strategic communication to settle differences properly, in particular, to avoid misunderstandings and misjudgment, so that both military and bilateral ties could progress towards the right direction, said Xu.

Kissinger said the two countries should enhance cooperation for common development, and safeguard the peace and stability of the world.
