BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Surinamese President Desire Delano Bouterse is scheduled to pay his first state visit to China from Wednesday to Saturday.
The following is a profile of Bouterse.
Bouterse was born in 1945 in Suriname. He founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 1987, and has served as the chairman of the party. In 1996, he was appointed state advisor.
In July 2010, Bouterse was elected president of Suriname. He was re-elected in July 2015.
Bouterse is married and has a son and two daughters.
In 1997, Bouterse visited China as presidential envoy and chairman of the NDP. In 2013, he attended the second World Peace Forum in Beijing as president of Suriname.
