ROME, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Three landscaping workers and a driver were killed in a road accident in southern Italy on Tuesday, the national Fire Department and local media reported.

The three workers were pruning olive trees along a roadside when a car mowed them down after its driver lost control of his vehicle. The driver also died when his car crashed into the workers' truck, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

A fifth person on the scene, also an employee of the landscaping firm, was thrown from a cherry picker while pruning higher branches and is hospitalized in critical condition, according to ANSA.

"Road accident at Galatone (near the southern city of Lecce): a car mowed down four men at work with their truck by the side of the road. Four people dead, one worker seriously injured," firefighters tweeted, posting a photo of the mangled carcass of a white car smashed against a blue truck.

As of September 2019, there were 780 workplace fatalities reported in Italy, compared to 834 deaths on the job in the first nine months of 2018, the National Institute for Workplace Insurance (INAIL) reported in October this year. Enditem
