GENEVA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) announced here on Tuesday that together with its partners, an international film showcase highlighting wildlife will be organized next year.

In a press statement, the CITES Secretariat said that the film showcase will be one of the global events marking next year's UN World Wildlife Day (on March 3), celebrated under the theme "Sustaining all life on Earth."

The call for entry will close on Jan. 4, 2020 and finalists will be announced in early February 2020. Winners will be presented at a high-level event to coincide with the global celebration of UN World Wildlife Day at UN Headquarters in New York on March 3 next year.

Also, winners and finalist films entering into the competition will be shown throughout 2020, known as "biodiversity super year", around the world and at various major events, the statement said.

In the environmental community, the year 2020 has been considered as a "super year", because several major events, including the IUCN World Conservation Congress and the Biodiversity COP15 will take place and new biodiversity targets will be agreed.

The CITES Secretariat is designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the global facilitator for the celebration of the March 3 World Wildlife Day each year in collaboration with organizations in the United Nations system.

According to the CITES Secretariat, award categories of the film showcase include Science, Innovation and Exploration, Issues and Solutions, People and the Wild, Stories of Hope, Global Voices, Short and Micro.
