JAKARTA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Wednesday stressed that Indonesia has set a target to finish in the top two at the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines - rather than the top four as the country previously stated.

Jokowi, as the president is widely known, announced the target at a ceremony to see off the country's 841 competitors in the regional multi-sports event.

"I asked for the top two in the SEA Games in the Philippines this year," said Jokowi.

The new target is higher than that of the top four previously stated by the Indonesian Youth and Sports Ministry.

However, the president did not give any further detail on the number of medals he expected to be secured.

Previously, Indonesian contingent chief Harry Warganegara said that the country had set a target of 54 gold medals for finishing in the top four.

Indonesian athletes will compete in 51 of 56 sports to be staged in the games, according to Warganegara.

About 9,840 athletes from 11 nations are expected to take part in the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines from November 30 to December 11.
