The United States did not make any effort in fulfilling its due commitment as one of the co-authors of the related UN resolution, while it also tried to impede other countries from doing it, Yermakov said.
MOSCOW, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Washington has tried to thwart the efforts of other countries to hold a conference at the United Nations on creating a zone free of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the Middle East, a senior Russian diplomat said Wednesday.
Washington did not take part in the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction held on Nov. 18-22 in New York, said Vladimir Yermakov, the director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The United States did not make any effort in fulfilling its due commitment as one of the co-authors of the related UN resolution, while it also tried to impede other countries from doing it, Yermakov said at a press conference in Moscow, cited by Russian media.
The conference adopted a political declaration containing to work on a legally binding treaty to create the free zone.
Yermakov said the conference was nonetheless positive. ■
