WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. citizen has been arrested and charged with attempting to provide support for the terrorist group the Islamic State (IS), U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old suspect, Zachary Clark, was charged with attempting to provide material support for IS and distributing information about explosives, destructive devices, and weapons of mass destruction, said the statement, adding that each of the charges carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Clark allegedly pledged allegiance twice to IS and posted on encrypted pro-IS chatrooms numerous exhortations and instructions on bomb-making and other terrorist acts to be carried out in New York, according to the statement.

"Today's arrest in Brooklyn is a reminder that New York City remains a top terrorism target in the United States," New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill said in the statement.

Earlier this month, the Justice Department charged a street-gang leader from suburban Chicago with attempting to provide financial aid to IS.
