DUBLIN, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- There were almost 14,000 drones registered in Ireland as of the end of November 2019, according to the latest figures released by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).

The number of drones registered in the country has tripled since mandatory drone registration was introduced in December 2015, according to the IAA.

"Worldwide we've seen an upsurge in the use of drones and this is set to continue," said Peter Kearney, chief executive of the IAA, in an interview with local media.

The IAA predicted a possible surge in the demand for drones in the coming Christmas season and called on prospective drone buyers to follow the rules governing the use of drones in the country.

In Ireland, all drones each weighing 1 kg or more must be registered, according to the regulation. It also rules that drones are not allowed to fly within 5 kilometers of an airport.

The IAA has published a list of tips for drone users ahead of the Christmas holiday in a bid to reduce any untoward accidents caused by misuse.
