China's second-largest freshwater lake is a haven for migratory birds.

CHANGSHA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 50,000 migratory birds recently arrived at the wetlands of Dongting Lake in Hunan Province, central China, for this year's wintering, according to local authorities.

The natural environment at Hengling Lake Nature Reserve, part of the Dongting Lake wetland, has improved, attracting more bird species, including white cranes, wild ducks and swans.

As the second-largest freshwater lake in China, Dongting Lake plays an important role in overall ecological balance of the Yangtze River valley.
