CARACAS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela on Tuesday denounced a handful of countries for using the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for "political" ends.
Writing on Twitter, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Jorge Arreaza said that the country "rejects the political use of the mechanisms of the UNHRC," given the creation of a fact-finding mission by the UNHRC to investigate alleged human rights abuses in the South American country.
Arreaza attached a communique from the government, saying that the mission was proposed by "a small group of governments with serious records of violating human rights," with the aim of "attacking the legitimate institutions of the Venezuelan state."
The Venezuelan government is working with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights "to constructively tackle challenges in the matter of Human Rights, further strengthening the Venezuelan state's system of social protections," it said.
Venezuela has "repeatedly shown its willingness and commitment to cooperate" with various UN human rights agencies, it added.
On Monday, the UNHRC appointed representatives from Portugal, Chile and Ireland to serve as members of the Venezuelan fact-finding mission.
