OTTAWA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua)-- The public high schools across Ontario province in Canada are closed on Wednesday as teachers are on strike.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) launched the one-day strike after failed negotiations with the Ontario provincial government for a new contract on Tuesday, according to a statement by OSSTF on Wednesday.

Some 60,000 high school teachers and support staff, who are OSSTF members, took to street to protest against the provincial government's moves.

The OSSTF has been without a contract since August as it could not accept the government's e-learning, larger class sizes and other measures it said will degrade the education quality in the province.

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce blasted the OSSTF, calling the strike "unacceptable" for Ontario families.

Lecce said the OSSTF has rejected the provincial government's demand that it come up with its own proposal to help cut costs in the education system, according to CBC on Wednesday.

However, OSSTF President Leslie Wolfe said they haven't seen an offer from Lecce at all.
