BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.74 percent to end at 2,899.47 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.15 percent higher at 9,799.07 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 423.8 billion yuan (about 60.10 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 355.7 billion yuan in the previous trading day.
Most stocks rose, with gainers outnumbering losers by 1,152 to 245 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,757 to 315 on the Shenzhen bourse.
Companies in the industries of wireless headset, tire pressure monitoring and consumer electronics posted strong performance, with shares of Edifier Technology Co., Ltd. rising by the daily 10-percent limit to 19.12 yuan per share.
Bucking the upward trend, shares in the sectors of liquor, gold and farm produce processing led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.15 percent to close at 1,709.83 points Thursday.
