BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese discipline inspection and supervision organs have investigated 43,500 cases of corruption involved with mafia-like organizations and "protective umbrellas" that shelter gang crimes, according to the country's top discipline watchdog Thursday.

Nearly 50,000 party officials and staff working in public sectors involved in the cases have been punished since the national crackdown launched in August, said the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.

By the end of October, China had busted a total of 2,535 mafia-like organizations, 1,723 of which had "protective umbrellas" behind them, accounting for 68 percent of such cases.
