RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Gabriel Barbosa struck his 43rd goal of the season as Brazilian Serie A champions Flamengo romped to a 6-1 home victory over Avai on Wednesday.

In their last match of the year at the Maracana stadium, Flamengo extended their lead at the top of the 20-team standings to 19 points with one match remaining.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta gave the hosts the lead in the 11th minute but Joao Lourenco equalized shortly after. Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Diego then restored Flamengo's lead with a long-range effort following a corner and the hosts took control thereafter.

Barbosa and Lincoln netted either side of halftime before teenager Reinier completed the rout with two goals in the last 10 minutes.

Flamengo secured their sixth Brazilian Serie A title with four games remaining last month, just a day after beating River Plate in the Copa Libertadores final.

Meanwhile, Avai are rooted to the bottom of the standings and will be one of four teams relegated to Serie B, having taken just 19 points from their 37 matches.

In Sao Paulo, 2019 champions Palmeiras ended a four-game winless run by thrashing Goias 5-1. Dudu and Gabriel Veron each grabbed a brace while Ze Rafael was also on target for the hosts. Rafael Moura scored for the visitors from the penalty spot.

In other matches on Wednesday, Vasco da Gama drew 1-1 at Bahia and Gremio won 2-0 at home to Cruzeiro.
