KIGALI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Cooperation with China on Juncao technology, which can be used for producing mushroom, animal feed and biomass fuel, is very important to Rwanda, according to a Rwandan agricultural official on Friday.

Use of the Chinese Juncao technology is in line with the government's vision of having a commerce-driven agricultural sector, noted Patrick Karangwa, director general of Rwanda Agriculture Board, at the closing ceremony of a training course on the technology here.

The 25-day training course, attended by 45 Rwandan people from both public and private sectors, was sponsored by China's Ministry of Commerce and taught by experts from China's Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.

The training course is expected to promote the understanding of the agricultural technology and capacity development of the Rwandan people, according to Karangwa.

Juncao, which literally means "mushroom" and "grass," refers to a Chinese-invented technology using grass to grow mushrooms. China has shared the agricultural technology with over 100 countries. Its use can help increase local income through low-cost mushroom cultivation and contain desertification by providing a new source of cattle feed.

Karangwa noted in his address that being a high value commodity makes mushroom one of the potential strategic choices for Rwanda's agricultural transformation. Meanwhile, mushroom as food can help improve the nutrition and health situation in the central African country.

Wang Jiaxin, economic and commercial counsellor at the Chinese embassy, said Juncao technology fits Rwanda's need to grow high yield crops and diversify crops to upgrade its agriculture.

Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, the birth place of the Juncao technology, started teaching Rwandans the technology in 2005.
