BEIRUT, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Hezbollah's deputy leader Sheikh Naim Qassem slammed the United States on Saturday for interfering in Lebanon's internal affairs, the National News Agency reported.

"U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo does not want Hezbollah to have a role in the coming government while the party represents part of the Lebanese population," Qassem said.

Qassem also noted that Israel and the U.S. are benefitting from the latest developments in Lebanon and they are behind any civil conflict in the country.

Lebanon has been witnessing nationwide protests since Oct. 17 with protesters calling upon the resignation of the current ruling political class.

Hezbollah and its supporters have accused the U.S. of standing behind these developments in Lebanon to exclude the Shiite party from the Lebanese political scene.
