BERLIN, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Wasteful Bayern Munich gave away a one-goal lead after losing 2-1 to Borussia Monchengladbach on Ramy Bensebaini's brace at the 14th round in Bundesliga on Saturday.

Borussia Monchengladbach have defended their top spot after bouncing back from one goal down to edge defending champions Bayern Munich, who suffered their second straight defeat.

The German record champions grabbed the reins from the kickoff and came close through Thomas Muller and top striker Robert Lewandowski in the opening period.

As the match progressed, Bayern pressed the hosts into the defence and created one chance after the other as Muller forced Monchengladbach's goalkeeper Yann Sommer into the action.

Sommer was also on guard moments later when he scratched Joshua Kimmich's shot on target off the goal-line.

Bayern had to take a goalless draw into the as Ivan Perisic pulled wide meanwhile Alassane Plea headed the first chance for the hosts on target with four minutes remaining in the first half.

After the restart, Bayern eventually broke the deadlock after Muller's assist found Perisic, who marked the opener with a turn shot from 15 meters in the 49th minute.

The visitors retracted with the narrow lead and invited Monchengladbach with the equalizer at the hour mark when Bensebaini nodded home from eight meters to shock Hansi Flick's men.

Both teams played cautious as neither side wanted to squander one point. However, it were the Bavarians once again who invited Monchengladbach as Javi Martinez felled Marcus Thuram inside the box in the closing period. Bensebaini stepped up and made no mistake to convert the subsequent penalty, killing the game in the added time.

With the result, leaders Borussia Monchengladbach defended their one-point advantage atop the standings meanwhile Bayern Munich slumped to the 7th position, seven points adrift of the top spot.

Elsewhere, runner-up Leipzig secured their second win in row after easing 3-1 past Hoffenheim thanks to Timo Werner's brace.

Borussia Dortmund climbed onto the 3rd position as they crushed hapless Fortuna Dusseldorf 5-0.

Jonathan Schmid's free-kick goal from 27 meters helped Freiburg to overcome Wolfsburg 1-0 in the dying minutes of the match.

Mainz winning run came to an end as Augsburg came from behind to reap a vital 2-1 comeback win and Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-1 win over Schalke.

The following fixtures conclude the 14th round in Bundesliga on Sunday: newly promoted Union Berlin face relegation threatened Cologne and Werder Bremen host bottom side Paderborn.
