NEW DELHI, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The lawmakers in Indian parliament's Upper House Rajya Sabha on Monday expressed condolences and observed a two-minutes silence over the horrific incident that claimed 43 lives on Sunday.
Expressing his concern, Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu termed the incident as "unfortunate and painful."
He also expressed concern over the inadequate fire-safety measures in the ill-fated building which led to the fire.
Senior leader of the main ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vijay Goel laid stress on the fact that a large number of illegal buildings without fire safety measures were operating in the country's capital city.
He called for a joint effort by all the political parties to work together on the issue, and ensure that such mishaps could be averted in future.
Member of the House belonging to Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Sanjay Singh also expressed grief over the tragedy.
Suggesting that should be no politics over such issues, Singh said that all government agencies in Delhi like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the Delhi Government should work together to prevent such incidents in future.
A fire broke out on Sunday inside a four storey building in north Delhi's "Filmistan" area, leaving at least 43 people dead.
