TRIPOLI, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Libya's east-based army announced on Tuesday the takeover of a military camp of the UN-backed government in the south of the capital Tripoli, as the armed conflict continues.
"Abu al-Qasim Al-Abaj, military commander of southern Libya of the armed forces, confirmed that our forces had taken control of a military camp belonging to the (UN-backed) government in Al-Owainat area (in southern Tripoli)," the east-based army's information office said in a statement.
The east-based army forces also captured the commander of the military force of the camp and seized ammunition and military vehicles, according to the statement.
The east-based army has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around Tripoli, in an attempt to take over the capital city and overthrow the UN-backed government.
The armed conflict has killed and injured thousands of people, while displacing nearly 120,000 civilians.
On Dec. 5, UN-backed Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Serraj said there will be no cease-fire without the withdrawal of the rival east-based army from western Libya.
