ATHENS, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Greece has sent two letters addressed to the United Nations to protest the Turkish-Libyan memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding the establishment of maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea, government spokesperson Stelios Petsas said on Tuesday.

The letters, addressed respectively to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the presidency of the Security Council, stated that the MoU signed on Nov. 27 in Istanbul had violated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, according to the Greek official.

The Greek government believed that the agreement had disregarded the presence of the Greek islands in that maritime area, including the island of Crete, and infringed on Greece's sovereign rights in the maritime area.

The issue will also be raised by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the European Council on Thursday and Friday, Petsas said.
