LONDON, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Londoners have seen the largest gain in life expectancy than any other part of Britain, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed on Wednesday.

Britain's official statisticians have analysed figures between 2013 and 2018 to determine the areas where people have the longest, and shortest lifespans.

It showed the lifespans of both males and females were the highest this century in Britain -- 79.3 years for men and 82.9 years for women.

Topping the chart for the longest lives were females in London who could expect to live to 84.5 years, almost six months longer than in the 2013-2015 period. London males were also chart toppers with an increased life span of 80.7 years, also six months longer than the previous period.

The data showed that on average people in London lived almost three years longer than men and women in northeast England.

England and Northern Ireland were the only parts of the UK to show any significant improvements in life expectancy at birth between 2013 and 2018.

Life expectancy at birth was highest in the four most southerly regions of England for both males and females, with London showing the largest gain between 2013 and 2018.

In contrast, life expectancies for the five other regions were significantly below the average for England, with a clear north-south divide apparent during this century, the figures found.

ONS said overall there were small increases in male and female life expectancy at birth in the UK between 2013 to 2015 and 2016 to 2018, which were 0.2 percent and 0.1 percent respectively.
