RAMALLAH, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two Palestinian workers were injured on Saturday by Israeli soldiers in the northern West Bank, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

One of the two Palestinians was injured by ammunition while the other shot by a rubber-coated bullet, PRCS said.

Paramedics rushed the two wounded Palestinians to a hospital in the nearby city of Tulkarem, both in moderate condition, it added.

Local sources said the two were trying to cross into Israel for work near Nazlet Issa military checkpoint when the soldiers opened fire toward them.

In the past week, at least seven workers were injured when trying to cross border fences to work in Israel.

No Israeli source was available for comment on the incident. However, Israeli authorities often say they try to thwart "illegal infiltration" into Israel.

Israel imposes several restrictions on Palestinians who apply for permits to work in Israel, which forces many to seek jobs without acquiring permits from Israeli authorities.

About 120,000 Palestinian workers enter Israel through official permits on a daily basis, according to the General Union of Palestinian Workers.

Palestinian sources estimate that more than 30,000 Palestinians work in Israel without permits, often with lower wages, because of difficult economic conditions in Palestine.
